Argassi Backed by the olive groves of Mount Skopos and situated next to the capital Zakynthos Town, Argassi is a lively resort full of character and atmosphere. Zante / Zakinthos The Venetians christened Zante "the flower of the orient", and it;s easy to see why because this typically Greek island is one of outstanding beauty. Zante's beaches are among some of the best in the whole of Greece, with golden sands and wonderfully clear waters. The northern coast is littered with caves and seas eroded cliffs that act as a magnet for the pleasure boats. Most spectacular of all are the Blue Caves which bathe in a light of shimmering blues best viewed in the early morning. Many come here to see the Loggerhead turtles who nest and lay their eggs on the beaches along the southern shores. Shipwreck (Picture Top) One of the most photographed sites in the whole of the Greek islands is the shipwreck at Aghios Georgios. The story is, that in about 1982, the ship named "Panayiotis" was smuggling cigarettes from Turkey to Italy for the Italian Mafia, but it fell victim to bad weather. The beach can only be reached by boat, but it is possible to photograph the wreck from a small platform on the top of the cliff. The wreck, now gradually being covered by sand, is a popular stopping off point on the "around the island" boat trips which visit the beach for an exploration and swim. Weather During the summer months and especially in August, rainfall is very rare. Average temperatures for the summer are show below: Day temperatures in °C |
